about

Linking the cities of Liverpool and Manchester is the world’s first passenger railway line. Crossing a notoriously boggy wilderness called Chap Moss, this straight route across Lancashire was the first landscape seen at speed. In the edgelands of these cities both Paul and myself were brought up. The stations along the route were familiar names and the sound of a passing train in the night something magical. Crown Street, Collins Green, Kenyon Junction, Astley and Flow Moss Cottage are now ghost stations; no longer there, except in the memory.
The text of the poem features a sense of forward motion followed by short pauses. Like the spaces of white on the page, there are moments of halting periodically in the music; implied stations. The blurred harmonies and the series of passing events are as much about the view from the train as a set of childhood memories.
